Saudi court sentences woman to 10 lashes for driving

محكمة سعودية تقضي بجلد سيدة بسبب سياقة السيارة

A Saudi woman, Shaima Ghassaniya has been sentenced by a court to 10 lashes for driving in the kingdom, which bans women from doing so.

Women have previously been detained for driving, but never sentenced by a court, especially since there is no legislation that prohibits their driving.

The ruling comes just two days after King Abdullah announced women’s right to participate and vote in the Saudi elections set to take place in 2015, and join the Shura Council.

أصدرت محكمة سعودية حكما بجلد شيماء جستنيه عشر جلدات بسبب سياقتها للسيارة في المملكة، التي تمنع النساء من السياقة.

وكان قد سبق أن تم اعتقال بعض النساء في وقت سابق لنفس السبب، لكن دون أن تصدر أية محكمة حكما في حقهن، سيما أنه ليس ثمة أي نص تشريعي يمنعهن من السياقة.

ويأتي هذا الحكم بعد مرور يومين فقط على إعلان الملك عبد الله عن منح النساء السعوديات الحق في الترشح والتصويت خلال انتخاب أعضاء مجلس الشوري سنة 2015.
