Egypt's "pharaoh" Hosni Mubarak set to go on trial

Today marks the opening of the trial of former Egyptian President of around three decades Hosni Mubarak, along with his two sons Gamal and Alaa, his former interior minister Habib al Adly, and six senior police officers – in what is being called an unprecedented “revolutionary” move.

All are charged with complicity in the deaths of around 800 - 850 protesters that were killed during the Egyptian uprisings, prior to the president’s ouster on February 11 of this year, misusing public funds, and corruption. The trials are set to be held at a police academy rather than the previously decided Cairo convention centre for security purposes.

Mubarak has been under arrest at a Sharm el Sheikh military hospital since April, and has been allegedly diagnosed with cancer, with some media reporting refusal to eat. Despite health officials saying he is in stable condition and that transportation to the Cairo would not pose a health threat, some Egyptian officials are saying the president may not appear for at least the start of the trial.

Egyptians have shown mixed reactions about the trial, but it is a certainty that everyone is awaiting a verdict and hoping for a fair trial.

تبدأ اليوم جلسات محاكمة الرئيس المصري السابق حسني مبارك والذي حكم البلاد حوالي ثلاثة عقود. وسيحاكم معه أيضا ابناه علاء وجمال ووزير الداخلية السابق حبيب العادلي وستة من كبار ضباط الشرطة – فيما يوصف بأنه خطوة "ثورية" لم يسبق لها مثيل.

ووجهت لجميع المتهمين تهمة الضلوع في قتل مابين 800 إلى 850 متظاهر أثناء الثورة المصرية، قبل عزل الرئيس في الحادي عشر من فبراير الماضي، فضلا عن إهدار المال العام والفساد. وستُعقد جلسات المحاكمة بمقر أكاديمية الشرطة بدلا من أرض المعارض لاسباب أمنية.

والجدير بالذكر أن مبارك قيد الاحتجاز بمستشفى شرم الشيخ العسكري منذ إبريل/ نيسان الماضي، ويقال إنه مصاب بالسرطان وأنه عازف عن تناول الطعام بحسب بعض وسائل الإعلام. ويرى بعض المسؤولين بالقطاع الصحي أن حالة مبارك مستقرة وأن نقله للقاهرة لايشكل خطرا على صحته، بيد أن مسؤولين آخرين يقولون أنه من المحتمل ألا يمثل مبارك أمام المحكمة في أولى جلسات محاكمته.

وتباينت ردود أفعال المصريين حيال المحاكمة لكن المؤكد أن الجميع ينتظرون الحكم بشأنه، آملين في محاكمة عادلة.
