Lebanon defense minister denies WikiLeaks cables revealing he advised Israel on how to "get rid of Hezbollah"

Elias Murr, Lebanon’s Defense Minister, has denied allegations published on WikiLeaks reporting that he gave advice to Israel, back in a 2008 meeting with then US Ambassador Michele Sison, on how to get rid of Hezbollah in case of another war. The aide speaking on behalf of Murr said the information is incomplete and inaccurate, aiming only to “sow discord in Lebanon.”

The cable said that Murr’s advice was that in attacking Hezbollah, Israel should avoid two main things: the first being that they must not access UN buffer zones lest Hezbollah take it as a valid excuse to employ men there, and the second being that Israel cannot bomb infrastructure in Christian areas, as the Christians were supportive of the Israel until they attacked their regions during the 2006 war.

Murr also mentioned that a new conflict between Israel and Hezbollah “is not war with Lebanon, it is with Hezbollah,” and that he would do anything in his power to keep the army out of it to avoid losing “thousands of soldiers for no reason.”

أنكر وزير الدفاع اللبناني، إلياس المر، الإدعاءات المنشورة في برقيات ويكيليكس والتي تفيد أنه قام بتقديم النصيحة للإسرائيليين، في لقاءٍ عُقِدَ معهم في 2008، ثم للسفيرة الأمريكية ميشال سيسون، حول كيفية التخلص من حزب الله في حال قيام حربٍ أخرى في المنطقة. حيث صرح المساعد المتحدث باسم وزير الدفاع اللبناني أن المعلومات تلك منقوصةٌ وغير دقيقة، ولا تهدف سوى إلى "زرع الفتنة في لبنان".

حيث تقول البرقية أن نصيحة المر كانت تتمثل في أنه في حالة الهجوم على حزب الله، يجب أن تتجنب إسرائيل شيئين رئيسيين: الأول في أنه يجب أن يصلوا إلى المناطق العازلة الواقعة تحت رقابة الأمم المتحدة خشية أن يستولي حزب الله عليها كعذرٍ مباحٍ لتوظيف الرجال هناك، في حين يتمثل الثاني في أن إسرائيل لا تستطيع أن تفجر البنية التحتية في المناطق المأهولة بالمسيحيين، حيث أن المسيحيين كانوا مؤيدين للإسرائيليين حتى قاموا بالهجوم على مناطقهم خلال حرب 2006.

هذا وقد ذكر المر أن صراعاً جديداً فيما بين إسرائيل وحزب الله "لا يمثل حرباً مع لبنان، إنما هي حرباً مع حزب الله"، و أنه سيقوم بكل ما يلزمه الأمر وفي نطاق سلطته للحفاظ على الجيش بعيداً عن تلك الحرب بهدف تجنب خسارة "آلاف الجنود بدون سبب".
