Egypt's Election Supervisory Commission warns of Muslim Brotherhood's slogan

لجنة الاشراف علي الانتخابات في مصر تحذر من "الاسلام هو الحل"

Egypt's Supreme Election Commission has warned candidates from exploiting religion in their slogans, symbols or promotion activities in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Such warning is one of the Commission's attempts at preventing the Muslim Brotherhood from using their famous slogan "Islam is the Solution". The commission has also demanded that all candidates abstain from using any symbols that might suggest sexual or origin discrimination.

حذرت اللجنة العليا للانتخابات في مصر المرشحين من استخدام شعارات أو رموز أو القيام بأنشطة للدعاية لها مرجعية دينية أو ذات طابع ديني في الانتخابات البرلمانية المقبلة.

ويشير البعض إلى أن التحذير هو خطوة جديدة من اللجنة لمحاولة منع جماعة الأخوان المسلمين من استخدام شعارها المعروف "الاسلام هو الحل".

وكانت تحذيرات حكومية متكررة قد خرجت الفترة الماضية لمرشحي الجماعة بشأن استخدام شعارهم المعروف قبل أن تطالب اللجنة جميع المرشحين بالامتناع عن استخدام أي رموز ذات طابع ديني أو على أساس التفرقة بسبب الجنس أو الأصل.

  • In an article for Mahmoud Ghazlan, he mentioned that the actual meaning of the slogan is that Islam is the basis of reform in the area of human rights. He offered evidence from the Holy Qur'an of Islam's support to principles such as freedom of expression and religious freedom: 1. Freedom of belief and worship (Let there be no compulsion in religion) – (Al-Baqarah: 256). 2. Freedoms of opinion and expression that were given to Muslims who had the right to discuss decisions of the Prophet himself (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him), and it is He who had received God's revelations, in the battles of Badr, Uhud, and Al-Ahzab. They were free to express their opinion to the Caliph, to the extent that a man told Umar ibn Al-Khattab, "Fear Allah!", and Umar replied to him saying: "There is no good in you if you don't say it, neither in me if I do not listen to it." And when a woman corrected him while he was at the pulpit, he admitted his mistake and said, "A woman has hit the mark, while Umar has mistaken it."

  • From the same article: Some of those who say today that “Islam is the solution”, merely use the slogan, but their political and humanistic practices do not indicate that they have chosen Islam as a solution for their own problems. I don't see how we can say something then do a whole other thing, then mourn the fact that people do not believe us or sympathize with us, forgetting that there are 'Egyptians' who might have not chosen or approved of the slogan or the religion itself.
