World's largest spotlit cross inaugurated in Lebanon as symbol of world unity

تدشين أكبر صليب مضيء في العالم في لبنان كرمز لوحدة العالم

On Monday, the eve of the feast of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Lebanese Maronite Christians inaugurated an approximately 74 meter cross containing 1800 spotlights, making it the biggest lit cross in the world, according to Father Farid Doumit.

The cross was erected in the village area of Qanat Bekish near a church dating back to 1898, and is considered to be a sign of unity among the world’s people. The process of building lasted about two years and cost around $1.5 million, chiefly acquired through donations from the Maronite Church and a French Catholic group.

Lebanon has 18 acknowledged religious sects, and is the only Arab country with a Christian president.

قامت الجالية المسيحية المارونية في لبنان عشية عيد الصليب يوم الإثنين بتدشين صليب يبلغ ارتفاعه مايقارب الـ 74 متراً يحتوي على 1800 ضوء، وهو مايجعله أكبر صليب مضيء في العالم وفقاً للأب فريد ضومط.

وقد نصب الصليب في قرية قنات باكيش بالقرب من كنيسة تعود إلى عام 1898 ويعتبر علامة للوحدة بين شعوب العالم.

استمرت عملية البناء نحو عامين وكلفت حوالي 1.5 مليون دولار تم الحصول عليها بشكل أساسي عن طريق تبرعات من الكنيسة المارونية والجماعات الكاثوليكية في فرنسا.

هذا ويوجد في لبنان 18 طائفة دينية معترف بها، وهو الدولة العربية الوحيدة التي يكون رئيسها مسيحياً.

  • Interesting debate on this: Can religion be used to bring people together? Many would argue not, I would say yes. Not too sure that an overtly Christian symbol like a 74m spotlit cross really provides the interfaith nuance that such untiy requires though. It's a strange one!
