Cameron supports Turkey’s EU accession during visit to Ankara

كاميرون مدافعاً عن انضمام تركيا للاتحاد الأوروبي: من الخطأ تركها تحرس الخيمة دون دخولها

Weeks after Turkey refused to vote in the Security Council on new sanctions against Iran, which Western states accuse of seeking nuclear weapons, the United States and Britain have wooed Turkey’s dreams of joining the European Union, providing their rigorous support.

In Ankara, British Prime Minister David Cameron noted in an angry tone his astonishment at the sort of obstacles which certain countries have placed in front of Turkey’s attempts to accede to the EU, adding that “It would be a mistake to let Turkey guard the tent without letting her come in.”
As is well-known, France and Germany are the two largest states opposing Turkey’s accession out of the fear that they will lose their European identity in the face of 73 million Muslim Turks. It was this sentiment which prompted Cameron to say that “They think that Turkey must choose between East and West, as if choosing both were not an option.”

بعد أسابيع من رفضها التصويت فى مجلس الأمن على عقوبات جديدة ضد إيران غازلت الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وبريطانيا أحلام تركيا بالانضمام للأتحاد الأوروبي ودعماها بقوة.

فى أنقرة قال رئيس الوزراء البريطاني ديفيد كاميرون بلهجة غاضبة أنه مندهش من العراقيل التي تضعها بعض الدول أمام انضام تركيا للأتحاد الأوروبي، و أضاف " من الخطأ ان تتولى تركيا الحراسة أمام الخيمة، دون السماح لها بالدخول".

ومن المعروف أن فرنسا وألمانيا أكبر دولتين معارضتين للانضمام التركي خوفاً ضياع الهوية الأوروبية أمام 73 مليون مسلم تركي، وهو ما دفع كاميرون للتصريح " يعتقدون أن على تركيا أن تختار بين الشرق والغرب، وكأن اختيار الاثنين غير وارد".
