9/11-style plot against Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf aborted

إحباط مخطط لتفجير مرقد الإمام علي في مدينة النجف على طريقة هجمات 11 سبتمبر

US and Iraqi officials have emphasized that they have managed to stop a 9/11-style plot against Imam Ali Shrine in Najaf.

According to security sources, the plot included gunmen hijacking planes and flying them directly into the Shrine. Numerous airports were consequently closed down last Wednesday, including Baghdad's and Al-Basra's – which were reopened later. Najaf airport remains closed for the time being due to its proximity to the Shrine of Imam Ali.

أكد مسؤولون عراقيون وأميركيون أنه تم إحباط مخطط لتفجير مرقد الإمام علي في مدينة النجف بنفس الطريقة التي نفذت بها أحداث الحادي عشر من سبتمبر 2001 في الولايات المتحدة الأميركية.

وبحسب المصادر الأمنية، فإن المخطط -كان- يتضمن قيام المسلحين بخطف طائرات ثم توجيهها نحو المرقد وتفجيرها هناك ،وهو ما أدى إلى إغلاق عدد من المطارات يوم الأربعاء الماضي منها مطارا بغداد والبصرة، غير أنه تم إعادة افتتاحهما لاحقاً. وتم الإبقاء على مطار النجف مغلقا بسبب قربه من مرقد الإمام علي بن أبي طالب.
