Saudi Arabia: Senior cleric fired for criticizing mixed gender university

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia has fired one of the country's senior religious clerics over comments he made about the newly opened, co-educational technology university which bears the King's name and is located outside of Jeddah.

According to reports, Saad el Shethry was sacked after describing mixed gender education as evil and a great sin, and suggested the education at KAUST, the new $7 billion research facility, should be supervised by religious scholars to monitor what violates the Sharia.

  • An excellent post on Saudi Jeans about the fallout from Al-Shetri's comments: The real surprise, at least to me, came in how al-Shethri’s comments were received. The large number of articles written in response to the comments and the aggressive tone of these articles were nothing short of staggering. It started with a strongly-worded editorial by Jamal Khashoggi in al-Watan daily, who said al-Shethri would not be where he is if it was not for the support of King Abdullah, and therefor he should not speak publicly against the King’s university. Two dozens of articles in the local media followed Khashoggi’s steps and echoed pretty much the same idea, all attacking al-Shethri and telling him to keep his mouth shut.
